Cam Ward arrives at OTAs 10 pounds lighter and feeling faster
The Titans' second-year quarterback overhauled his diet and added cardio to address the pocket mobility questions that followed him from his rookie year.
Cam Ward arrived at Tennessee OTAs this week 10 pounds lighter than his playing weight last season. The 2026 No. 1 overall pick spent the offseason restructuring his diet and adding cardio work, partly in response to the pocket mobility questions that followed him from his rookie year.
How did he lose the weight?
Diet, mostly. Ward told reporters at OTAs that he 'started counting things' for the first time in his life: calories, protein, carbs. He also increased his cardio sessions from two to four per week during the offseason program. The weight target was set with the team's medical and performance staff. Ward described the change as 'feeling like I can throw all day without getting tired in the legs.'
Why does it matter?
Ward's college tape at Miami was characterized by improvisation and second-reaction throws. His Tennessee rookie year showed flashes but also a tendency to bail from the pocket early. A lighter, faster Ward would extend more plays without leaving structure and would also reduce the wear-and-tear concerns that come with QB hits. The Titans hope to see the same playmaking with better in-pocket movement.
What did teammates say?
Center Lloyd Cushenberry told reporters that Ward 'looks more confident and comfortable.' Receiver Calvin Ridley said the timing on intermediate routes had improved noticeably from minicamp. The head coach said Ward 'looks great physically,' which is the kind of public endorsement that doesn't move the needle but signals internal confidence.
What does the 2026 offense look like?
Brian Callahan returns as offensive coordinator after the 3-14 2025 season. The Titans added free-agent receiver DeAndre Hopkins (one-year deal), drafted USC tight end Jude McAtamney in the third round, and re-signed Tony Pollard with the franchise tag. Ridley remains the WR1. The offense is built to give Ward a target tree that mirrors the one he had at Miami, with separation-based routes and play-action emphasis.
What are realistic year-two expectations?
Most QB-needy teams hope for a 50 percent jump in production between years one and two. Ward's 2025 line: 2,840 passing yards, 14 TDs, 12 INTs across 11 starts. The internal projection for 2026 is 4,000 yards, 25-plus TDs, and a winning record. Tennessee's win total is set at 5.5 in Las Vegas. A year-two leap that gets the Titans to 7 or 8 wins would be the realistic measure of progress.
