Commanders Lose Marcus Mariota to Knee Injury in London; Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis Finishes Loss to Colts
Mariota hurt the MCL in his right knee on a sack near the goal line. Dan Quinn says the hope is that Jayden Daniels returns from his elbow dislocation against the Giants in Week 5.
Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota injured the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Sunday's 30-13 loss to Indianapolis at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving rookie Athan Kaliakmanis to make his NFL debut. Mariota will have tests Monday.
What happened?
Colts defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore sacked Mariota on third-and-goal from the 6. It is the same knee that bothered him in training camp. Kaliakmanis, a seventh-round pick, went 15 of 33 for 186 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and threw six passes that traveled at least 35 yards in the air, completing two for 95 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown to Trey Burks.
Who plays quarterback next week?
Possibly Jayden Daniels, who has missed two games with a dislocated left elbow and was limited in practice in England. Asked whether Daniels could return against the Giants after a full week of work, Quinn said: "That's the hope for sure." Whether Washington signs a veteran depends on Mariota's test results. "It's a significant change because you don't do quite the same things," Quinn said of playing a rookie. The Commanders are 1-3.
