Zach Wilson arrived in the league as a can't-miss arm talent out of BYU and the Jets' new franchise quarterback. Five years and three teams later, he is a journeyman backup looking for stability rather than stardom, with the New Orleans Saints the latest club betting there is still a starter buried in there somewhere.

Path to the league

Wilson starred at BYU from 2018 to 2020, capping his college career in 2020 by completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns against just three interceptions. That breakout season convinced the New York Jets to make him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Career highlights

Wilson started 33 games for the Jets across three up-and-down seasons before New York moved on. He was traded to the Denver Broncos in 2024, where he spent the year as the third-string quarterback and did not appear in a regular-season game, before signing a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins in March 2025.

2025 season recap

Wilson served as Tua Tagovailoa's backup in Miami and saw limited action, completing 6 of 11 passes for 32 yards across four appearances without a start. When the Dolphins benched Tagovailoa late in the season, they turned to rookie Quinn Ewers rather than Wilson to finish out the year.
