Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson donated $20,000 toward a team staffer's student loans during a Twitch livestream from training camp at St. John Fisher University, covering roughly half of the roughly $40,000 the graduate student still owed.
Who did the gift go to?
The recipient was a second-year graduate student from the University of Cincinnati assisting the Bills' athletic training staff during camp. The donation came through Gardner-Johnson's own Ceedy Cares Foundation.
Why did he do it?
Gardner-Johnson explained his reasoning live on the stream: "I'm helping somebody that's helping me... She helps us on the field, right?"
How does this fit his camp so far?
The gesture comes even as Gardner-Johnson deals with his own camp setback, a calf strain that briefly had him carted off the practice field. The donation is a reminder of the community-facing side of his profile away from the field.
