Bucs, Vita Vea Agree to Extension, Ending Hold-In
The one-year add-on effectively guarantees the two-time Pro Bowler $48 million over 2026 and 2027, resolving a standoff after his previous deal carried no guaranteed money.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defensive tackle Vita Vea agreed to a one-year extension that ends his hold-in, adding $6 million to his existing $18 million 2026 base and setting 2027 at $24 million with $30 million guaranteed.
Why was he holding in?
Vea requested a trade in July because his previous contract carried no guaranteed money, even though his pay ranked just 20th among NFL interior defensive linemen. He continued practicing with the team throughout, making it a hold-in rather than a hold-out, while pushing for a deal that reflected his market value.
What does the new deal guarantee?
Combined across 2026 and 2027, the extension effectively guarantees Vea $48 million, making it unlikely the team would release him over that span.
How has he performed?
A two-time Pro Bowler at 31, Vea posted 4.5 sacks and 13 QB hits last season, with a 65.6% pass-rush win rate against double teams that ranked ninth in the league. "Vita is exactly the type of player and person we want to build around in Tampa Bay," general manager Jason Licht said. "He has been a dominant force in the middle of our defense, an exceptional teammate, and a tremendous leader."
