Lamar Jackson Won't Have a New Ravens Deal Before the Season Starts

Jackson prefers not to negotiate once games begin, per ESPN, leaving Baltimore to revisit an extension after a season in which it faces roughly $40 million in 2027 cap overages.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will open the season without a contract extension, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, as Jackson keeps to his practice of not negotiating once the regular season begins.

What is his current deal?

Jackson is in the fourth year of the five-year, $260 million contract he signed in 2023, which includes $185 million guaranteed and runs through 2027. General manager Eric DeCosta had said this month he was optimistic about talks, and owner Steve Bisciotti said in January the team was willing to make Jackson "the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history."

Why does it matter for Baltimore?

The Ravens project to be roughly $40 million over the 2027 cap, and an extension is the usual way to reset a quarterback's cap number. Jackson's focus, he said, is Sunday's opener at Indianapolis under new coach Jesse Minter: "It starts Week 1. We can't worry about February until we are actually there."
