Dan Snyder's $49.9 million Potomac estate hits the market
The former Commanders owner is listing his River View compound nearly two years after selling the team. The asking price is one of the highest on the East Coast.
Dan Snyder listed his Potomac, Maryland estate for $49.9 million on Wednesday, nearly two years after selling the Washington Commanders to a group led by Josh Harris. The 17-acre property, known as River View, overlooks the Potomac River and was Snyder's primary residence during his 24-year ownership of the franchise.
What's on the property?
A 32,000-square-foot main house with 16 bedrooms, two pools, a private gym, a four-car garage with a turntable, a tennis court, and a private dock on the Potomac. The estate also includes a guesthouse, a separate caretaker's cottage, and approximately 1,000 feet of waterfront. The main residence was built in 1981 and substantially renovated by Snyder between 2002 and 2008.
How does the price compare?
$49.9 million would be the highest residential sale in Maryland history if it closes near asking. The current Maryland record is $19.5 million, set in 2022 by a Chevy Chase estate. The Snyder listing is priced well above the recent comps for the region but River View has no real comparable property on the East Coast in terms of waterfront acreage inside the DC area.
Why now?
Snyder sold the Commanders in July 2023 to the Harris group for $6.05 billion. He has spent most of the past two years in Europe and the British Virgin Islands. The Potomac estate has been substantially unused since the sale, with maintenance running into the low seven figures annually. The listing is consistent with reporting that Snyder intends to permanently relocate his primary residence outside the United States.
What's Snyder doing now?
Out of the public eye. He has not given a public interview since the Commanders sale closed. Multiple Washington-area outlets have reported that Snyder has split his time between London and a yacht primarily docked in the Mediterranean. The 2022 House Oversight investigation into his conduct as Commanders owner ended with a $60 million fine from the NFL; the league has not commented on his current status.
Who is likely to buy it?
Real estate brokers cited in the Washington Post listing point to three possible buyer profiles: a tech founder with East Coast roots, an international owner using the estate as a US base of operations, or a private foundation that would convert the property into a conference and retreat center. The price point is in foreign-buyer territory, but Maryland's recent property tax changes have reduced the carrying cost advantage for international buyers compared to other states.
