A jersey worn by Joe Montana in Super Bowl XXIV sold for $1,515,000 to Treasure Trove, a high-end collectibles firm, setting a new record for an NFL game-worn jersey.
What record did it break?
The sale surpassed the previous record of $1.39 million, set by a jersey from Tom Brady's final NFL game when it sold in November 2023.
What did Montana do in that game?
Montana wore the jersey in the 49ers' 55-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in January 1990, throwing for 297 yards and five touchdowns on 75.9% completion to win Super Bowl MVP. It's one of only three jerseys he's known to have worn across his four Super Bowl appearances, also including Super Bowls XIX and XXIII. He finished his career 4-0 in Super Bowls.
Why is the collectibles market paying record prices?
Treasure Trove CEO AJ Scaramucci said game-worn memorabilia remains "dramatically and just freakishly underpriced" relative to trading cards, a gap he suggested is starting to close as buyers chase historically significant, game-used pieces.
