John Niland, an offensive guard who helped the Dallas Cowboys win their first Super Bowl, died Saturday at age 82 in McKinney, Texas, according to his daughter Haven. A cause of death was not disclosed.
What was his playing career like?
A Massachusetts native and college star at Iowa, Niland was drafted fifth overall by the Cowboys in 1966. He played nine seasons in Dallas, starting 111 of 124 games, and earned six consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1968 to 1973, with first-team All-Pro honors in 1969, 1971 and 1972.

Niland helped protect quarterback Roger Staubach in the Cowboys' 24-3 win over Miami in Super Bowl VI on Jan. 16, 1972, the franchise's first championship.
