Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs Continues Hold-In as Extension Talks Play Out

Gibbs has now missed five straight practices and says 'only time will tell' when he returns, even as Dan Campbell insists he's 'not even sweating it.'

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has now missed five straight practices as his hold-in continues, and for the first time addressed his own timeline directly: asked when he'd return, Gibbs said "only time will tell." Head coach Dan Campbell maintains he's "not even sweating it," adding that both sides remain engaged and he expects a deal to get done.

Why does Gibbs want a new deal now?

Gibbs has put together three straight Pro Bowl seasons, and with that track record established, he's positioned for a significant payday. He's still attending meetings and staying around the facility even while sitting out practice, a sign the hold-in is a negotiating tactic rather than a full standoff.

Is there an injury complicating things?

Gibbs did complete a conditioning test earlier in the week, during which Campbell said he dealt with "a little bit of a back" issue. It's unclear whether that will affect how quickly he ramps up once a new contract is finalized.

Is there any real progress?

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, negotiations remain active, with "no debate inside the organization about whether Gibbs deserves a deal." Campbell has also acknowledged the pace has been slower than expected, previously saying he "did think an extension would be done by now."

What else is happening at Lions camp?

All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph remains "super optimistic" about an early-season return from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season, though Campbell isn't expecting him for Week 1. Fellow defensive back Brian Branch is on the active/PUP list recovering from a torn Achilles, with a return targeted for late camp or early September. Detroit also signed veteran tight end Anthony Firkser and placed offensive lineman Giovanni Manu on the active/non-football injury list, with Manu expected to miss 12 to 14 weeks.
