Raiders Extend Michael Mayer for Three Years, $45 Million
The deal, with $30 million guaranteed, comes the day before Mayer starts the opener in place of Brock Bowers, who is out after a meniscus procedure.
The Las Vegas Raiders signed tight end Michael Mayer to a three-year, $45 million extension with $30 million guaranteed, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Saturday, a day before Mayer starts the season opener against Miami with Brock Bowers sidelined.
Why pay the No. 2 tight end?
Mayer set career highs last season with 35 catches for 328 yards and a touchdown, most of it while Bowers was hurt: in four games during Bowers' five-game absence he had 18 catches for 196 yards and a score. With Bowers out at least the opener after Tuesday's meniscus trim, Mayer starts again. "I need to know the offense like the back of my hand, and I need to keep my head down and work," he said, crediting the return of position coach Luke Steckel and the arrival of head coach Klint Kubiak.
