Behren Morton grew up around football as the son of his high school head coach in Eastland, Texas, and turned that background into a multi-year starting job at Texas Tech. After stepping in as an underclassman when injuries hit the Red Raiders' quarterback room, Morton finished as one of the winningest passers in program history before the Patriots selected him in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Path to the league
A four-star recruit out of Eastland High School, Morton chose Texas Tech over offers from Baylor, SMU, TCU and Texas A&M. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2021, then was thrust into the starting role as a redshirt freshman in 2022 after injuries to Tyler Shough and Donovan Smith, completing 96 of 169 passes for 1,117 yards with 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions across four starts.
Career highlights
Morton took over full-time in 2023 and threw 15 touchdown passes, earning Independence Bowl Offensive MVP honors after throwing for 256 yards and three scores in the win. He broke out as a full-season starter in 2024, throwing for 3,335 yards and 27 touchdowns and picking up Big 12 weekly honors, though a shoulder surgery kept him out of the Liberty Bowl.

Morton started 12 games for Texas Tech in 2025, going 11-1 as a starter while completing 219 of 332 passes for 2,780 yards with 22 touchdowns against 6 interceptions, though injuries limited his availability late in the year. The New England Patriots selected him in the seventh round, 234th overall, of the 2026 NFL Draft.
