Brock Purdy was the last player picked in the 2022 NFL Draft. Four years later he signed a five-year, $265 million extension. The 49ers have built their entire future around a quarterback who arrived as a roster afterthought and turned into one of the most efficient passers in football.

Path to the league

Three-time All-Big 12 at Iowa State. Owns the school's career records for passing yards (12,170), touchdowns (81), completions (993) and completion percentage (67.7). The Cyclones never won a conference title with him, and he slid to pick 262 in 2022. Took over for an injured Trey Lance and an injured Jimmy Garoppolo as a rookie.

2025 season recap

Purdy injured his left shoulder and toe in the Week 1 opener against Seattle. The toe was the bigger issue and he missed five games. He returned for the back half of the season but the 49ers finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs as the division tilted to Seattle and Los Angeles. His efficiency stayed high when healthy.

What to watch in 2026

San Francisco drew the harshest travel script in the league: three coast-to-coast trips with short turnarounds. Purdy's $265M deal means the 49ers can't easily reload around him the way they used to. The offensive line, Christian McCaffrey's health, and Brandon Aiyuk's return from a 2024 ACL tear are the three variables that decide whether Purdy returns to MVP contention.
