Cameron Johnston's path to the NFL runs through the Australian Football League before he transitioned to American football at Ohio State. Since entering the league as an undrafted free agent, he has built a well-traveled career as a durable, productive punter across multiple franchises, most recently returning to Pittsburgh for a second stint.
Path to the league
Before switching codes, Johnston played Australian rules football for the Melbourne Football Club in 2011. He then played college football at Ohio State, where he was named Big Ten Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year and earned second-team All-America honors as a senior before signing with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent in 2017.
Career highlights
Johnston set single-season Eagles records for gross punting average (48.1 yards) and net punting average (42.7 yards) in 2018. He had some of his most productive seasons with the Houston Texans from 2021 to 2023, and has punted for 21,622 career yards on 458 punts with a 47.2-yard gross average through his career, including stops with the Steelers, Bills, and Giants.
2025 season recap
Johnston's 2025 season was a busy one, moving from Buffalo to the Giants mid-season. In limited action late in the year he punted 11 times for a 44.5-yard gross average and a 32.4-yard net average, with a long of 49 yards.
