George Gumbs Jr.'s NFL journey started far from the defensive line. He walked on at Northern Illinois as a wide receiver, moved to tight end, then finally found his home at defensive end, a transformation that carried him to Florida and eventually into the Colts' 2026 draft class.
Path to the league
A Chicago native out of Simeon Career Academy, Gumbs walked on at Northern Illinois as a receiver before shifting to tight end and then defensive end, where he found his niche. After breaking out on the defensive line, he transferred to Florida for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The Colts selected him in the fifth round, 156th overall, of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Career highlights
Gumbs closed out his Northern Illinois career with 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks before adding roughly 20 pounds of muscle for his move to the SEC. In 22 games at Florida he recorded 66 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He also earned an invite to the 2026 East-West Shrine Bowl, showcasing his continued rise as a pass rusher.
2025 season recap
Gumbs started three games for Florida in 2025 before undergoing knee surgery that cut his season short. Despite the limited action, his body of work over two seasons in Gainesville, including a strong 2024 campaign with five sacks and eight tackles for loss, was enough to convince the Colts to draft him in the fifth round.
