Three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time MVP entering his ninth season, now recovering from a December ACL tear.
Patrick Mahomes was the strong favorite for a third regular-season MVP through eight games of 2025 before he tore the ACL in his left knee in early December. The injury ended his season and the Chiefs' bid for a fourth Lombardi in seven years. He sits at the recovery checkpoint heading into 2026: cleared for OTAs in late May, on track for Week 1 in Denver.
Path to the league
Texas Tech product, drafted 10th overall by the Chiefs in 2017. Sat behind Alex Smith as a rookie, then took over in 2018 and immediately won MVP at 23. The Chiefs traded a king's ransom to move up for him; nine seasons later, the trade looks like the steal of the decade.
Career highlights
35,939 career passing yards and 267 career touchdowns through 2025. Three Super Bowl titles (LIV, LVII, LVIII) and three Super Bowl MVPs, the latter a feat only Joe Montana matches. Two regular-season MVPs (2018 and 2022). 1,071 career Super Bowl passing yards and seven Super Bowl touchdown passes rank fifth all-time in both categories.
2025 season recap
Through eight games Mahomes was throwing the ball as well as anyone in football, leading the MVP race over Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. The Chiefs were 6-2 when he tore the ACL on a low hit in Week 14. Carson Wentz took over, went 3-0 in the regular season, and quarterbacked Kansas City to Super Bowl LX before losing 23-20 to Seattle.
What to watch in 2026
Andy Reid said this week that Mahomes is cleared to throw in Phase 2 OTAs from May 26 through 28. The bigger question is mobility. Mahomes built his game on broken-play improvisation, and even a slightly slowed scramble timer would change Kansas City's offense. The internal target is full clearance by August camp, with no preseason snaps.
