Scott Matlock is the definition of positional versatility, a sixth-round pick who has carved out a niche playing meaningful snaps on offense, defense and special teams for Los Angeles. What started as a defensive line rotation role in 2023 turned into a fullback conversion that has kept him firmly on the roster.

Path to the league

Matlock starred at Boise State, racking up 115 tackles, 11.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss over his college career as a defensive tackle. The Chargers selected him in the sixth round, No. 200 overall, of the 2023 NFL Draft. In high school at Homedale, he had earned all-state honors on both sides of the ball plus at tight end, a preview of the versatility to come.

Career highlights

Matlock played exclusively on the defensive line as a rookie before the Chargers began transitioning him to fullback in his second season. By 2024, he was appearing in all 17 games with 11 starts, catching four passes for 28 yards while also working the edge on defense and contributing on special teams.
