Stone Smartt's road to the NFL ran through a position change, moving from quarterback to tight end late in his college career. He spent three seasons with the Chargers, followed by a year with the Jets, and now joins the Eagles after signing in March 2026.
Path to the league
Smartt played quarterback at Riverside City College, earning First-Team JUCO All-American honors and the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year award in 2018, before transferring to Old Dominion in 2019. He moved to tight end in 2021, his final college season, catching 17 passes for 167 yards. Smartt went undrafted in 2022 and signed with the Chargers.
