San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will be limited at the start of training camp after a July 14 car crash near his Northern California home left him with a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, more than 40 stitches in his face and a concussion. General manager John Lynch said Saturday that Shanahan is in concussion protocol and that his return to full duty will be dictated by his recovery and the team's medical staff.
What happened in the crash?
Shanahan collided with an SUV on July 14. He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where he spent much of the day before being released. The other driver was not injured, and police found no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved; both drivers were reported as cooperative with responding officers.

The injury list is extensive for a coach expected to be on the practice field: a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, more than 40 stitches to close facial cuts, and a concussion serious enough to place him in the NFL's concussion protocol. Lynch said Saturday that Shanahan is recovering and that his timeline for a full return depends on clearing that protocol.
Who runs camp while he's out?
Assistant head coach Chris Foerster, along with San Francisco's coordinators, will handle head-coaching responsibilities while Shanahan works through his recovery on a limited basis. Lynch described Shanahan as "very eager" to get back on the field, but gave no firm date for when he'll resume full head-coaching duties.
