San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was not at fault in the July 14 car crash that left him hospitalized, according to Palo Alto police records, which found no evidence either driver was impaired and cited neither party. Separately, longtime friend and NFL analyst Chris Simms revealed that Shanahan came close to losing his right eye in the wreck.

Palo Alto police said there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved for either driver and that both were cooperative with responding officers. No citations were issued, clearing Shanahan of fault in the two-car collision near his Northern California home.

Shanahan suffered a broken nose, broken ribs, a broken hand, more than 40 stitches to close facial cuts, and a concussion. Simms, a close friend, added a new detail this week: Shanahan came dangerously close to losing his right eye in the crash, a risk not previously disclosed by the team or the coach himself.

Shanahan remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and is participating in training camp on a limited basis while assistant head coach Chris Foerster and San Francisco's coordinators handle day-to-day duties. General manager John Lynch has said Shanahan is "very eager" to return, though no firm timeline for a full return to head-coaching duties has been given.
