The San Francisco 49ers traded running back Zamir White to the New Orleans Saints for linebacker Deion Jones, the teams agreed Sunday night.
Why did San Francisco make this move?
The 49ers signed White on Aug. 12 to cover backfield injuries, but with Christian McCaffrey back at practice, they had surplus depth at running back and needed help at linebacker instead.
Why did New Orleans want White?
The Saints needed running back help after Alvin Kamara suffered a knee injury in the preseason.
What's Jones's background, and why was he available so soon after signing with New Orleans?
Jones, a 2016 second-round pick out of LSU, made a Pro Bowl with Atlanta in 2017 and has appeared in 128 games with 91 starts across the Falcons, Browns, Panthers and Buccaneers. He had signed a one-year free-agent deal with the Saints roughly two weeks earlier, giving New Orleans a brief look before flipping him for backfield help.
