Brandon Aiyuk shouts 'Go Commanders' as his 49ers limbo drags on

An Instagram post praising Washington reignited speculation about where the receiver lands next. But a social-media shout-out is not a trade request, and his situation in San Francisco remains stuck.

Brandon Aiyuk posted a Commanders cheer to his Instagram Story on Sunday night, chanting 'Go Commanders! Go Commanders! Go Commanders! Raise Hail! Take Command!' and sharing a photo of Mark Rypien holding the Super Bowl XXVI trophy. With Aiyuk's San Francisco future already declared over by the team, the post set off fresh speculation about where he plays next. It is worth being clear about what it was and was not: a shout-out on social media is not a trade demand or a sign that any deal is close.

What did Aiyuk actually post?

On Sunday night, June 22, Aiyuk used his Instagram Story to cheer for the Washington Commanders, repeating 'Go Commanders' three times and adding the franchise rallying cries 'Raise Hail' and 'Take Command.' He paired it with an image of former quarterback Mark Rypien and the Lombardi Trophy from Washington's Super Bowl XXVI win. That is the full extent of the post. He did not request a trade, name the 49ers, or reference any negotiation. ESPN framed the likely motivation as Aiyuk's desire to reunite with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, his close friend and former Arizona State teammate, but that read is interpretation rather than anything Aiyuk stated.

Where do things stand between Aiyuk and the 49ers?

His relationship with San Francisco has been broken for months. Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024, then tore the ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee during the 2024 season. The 49ers voided his remaining guaranteed money after he did not take part in required rehab sessions, and the team placed him on its reserve/left list in December 2025. In January 2026, general manager John Lynch said it was 'safe to say that he has played his last snap with the Niners.' San Francisco has held onto him while hoping to find a trade partner, but no deal has materialized. Earlier in June, Aiyuk called the team 'dumb' and 'stupid' in videos and suggested the 49ers were afraid to release him.

Is a move to Washington realistic, or just noise?

For now it is closer to noise than news. There is no reported trade in progress, and the Instagram post is the only thread connecting Aiyuk to the Commanders. The football questions are also real: Aiyuk has not played since the 2024 injury, though there are encouraging signs on the recovery front. Teammate George Kittle said he watched Aiyuk run over 22 mph and stop sharply roughly eight months ago, which suggests the knee is progressing. When healthy, Aiyuk has been a high-end receiver, posting 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 on his way to second-team All-Pro honors. Any acquiring team, Washington or otherwise, would be betting on that player returning after a serious injury and a contentious year away from the field. Until something concrete surfaces, the shout-out is best read as a glimpse of where Aiyuk's head is, not where his contract is headed.
