Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to the team Monday after a roughly two-week absence following a shooting at his family's home in Loudoun County, Virginia, on July 26. His wife, Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries; head coach Andy Reid said she is in stable condition.
What happened, and who was charged?
The couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at a detention center in Loudoun County.
Why did Bieniemy step away, and why is he back now?
Bieniemy took time away from the team in the immediate aftermath to be with his family. He returned to the Chiefs on Monday with the organization's support, continuing to support his family while resuming his coaching duties.
What's his role with Kansas City?
Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator for the 2026 season, a role he previously held from 2018 to 2022. In between, he served as Washington's offensive coordinator in 2023, spent 2024 on UCLA's staff, and coached running backs for the Chicago Bears in 2025.
