Kyle Shanahan Nears Full Strength, Plans to Coach 49ers' Preseason Opener
The coach says he feels about 100% on 'the important stuff' as he closes in on full recovery from last month's car crash, with lingering headaches and fatigue his main remaining symptoms.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he intends to coach the team's preseason opener against the Titans on Thursday as he continues recovering from last month's car crash. "As far as the important stuff, I feel it's about 100%," Shanahan said.
What symptoms remain?
Shanahan said his head "feels so much better," but described lingering effects as "just headaches and fatigue." He's been pacing himself at the facility: "I try not to come in here every single day because I feel like, if I did, I wouldn't be able to pull off my normal routine."
What happened in the crash?
Shanahan said he was using his Tesla Model S's autopilot feature when his phone fell while he was driving south on Alma Street on July 14. He suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand and more than 40 stitches over his eye.

Shanahan credited his ability to be patient with the recovery to his confidence in acting coach Chris Foerster and coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and Brant Boyer, who ran the team while he was sidelined.
