Chiefs Trade Offensive Tackle Wanya Morris to Falcons

Atlanta sends a 2027 sixth-round pick to Kansas City for Wanya Morris and a 2027 seventh-rounder, adding tackle depth after Kaleb McGary's surprise retirement.

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded offensive tackle Wanya Morris to the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Atlanta is sending a 2027 sixth-round pick to Kansas City in exchange for Morris and a 2027 seventh-round selection, a modest price for a 25-year-old with 16 career starts who had slipped down the Chiefs' depth chart by minicamp.

What are the Falcons getting in Wanya Morris?

Wanya Morris arrived in Kansas City as a third-round pick in 2023 and made 16 starts over three seasons, including 11 at left tackle in 2024. He stood out as a run blocker during his rookie year and later built up valuable experience as a swing tackle capable of filling in on either side. His most extended run as a starter came early in 2024, when he took over the left tackle job. That stretch ended abruptly in December, when he suffered a season-ending left knee injury on the opening snap against Houston. Now 25, Morris gives Atlanta a young, experienced option at a position where the roster had grown dangerously thin.

Why did Atlanta need tackle help so badly?

The Falcons' tackle depth took several hits in a short span. Longtime right tackle Kaleb McGary unexpectedly retired, removing a fixture from the right side of the line. Jawaan Taylor was unavailable during OTAs, and Storm Norton landed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, leaving the position group stretched even thinner heading into the summer. Right tackle carries extra weight in Atlanta because both quarterbacks competing for the starting job, Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr., are left-handed, which makes the right side the blind side. New head coach Kevin Stefanski also plans to run more plays from under center, putting an even bigger premium on protection there.

Why were the Chiefs willing to move on?

Morris had fallen down the Kansas City depth chart by minicamp, and the front office chose to extract value rather than carry him into training camp as a buried reserve. The return is small but real: the Chiefs move up from a 2027 seventh-round pick to a sixth-rounder while clearing a roster spot at a crowded position. For a player coming off a serious knee injury who was no longer in the team's plans, that qualifies as sensible business. The trade was reported by ESPN's Marc Raimondi and Nate Taylor, with sourcing from Jeremy Fowler. For Morris, the move trades a logjam in Kansas City for a clear opportunity in Atlanta, where the path to meaningful snaps is wide open.
