Steelers Trade Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys for a 2028 Second-Round Pick and a 2027 Sixth
The cornerback has not played this season because of a back injury and has no extension. Dallas does not plan to give him one before the season ends, and there is a chance he debuts Sunday at Houston.
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick, ending a contract standoff that had run since the summer.
Why did Pittsburgh move him?
The two sides were far apart on an extension, with a significant gap between the Steelers' valuation and what Porter wanted, and he is in the final year of his rookie deal. He has been inactive for all three games with a back injury he aggravated on the first day of camp. Rookie third-round pick Daylen Everette has been filling in.
What do the Cowboys get?
A starting-caliber cornerback for a secondary that has been without Jalen Thompson and Shavon Revel and has allowed 82 points in three games. No extension is part of the trade and Dallas does not plan to do one during the season, so Porter will reach free agency in March unless he is tagged. A league source told ESPN there is a chance he plays Sunday against the Texans, which would be his first game since Pittsburgh's wild-card loss to Houston in January.
