June Jones, Former Falcons Coach and Run-and-Shoot Pioneer, Dies at 73
Jones coached the Falcons from 1994 to 1996, was the Chargers' interim coach in 1998 and became Hawai'i's winningest coach, taking the 2007 team to the Sugar Bowl.
June Jones, the former Atlanta Falcons head coach who helped popularize the run-and-shoot offense, has died at 73, the University of Hawai'i confirmed. No cause of death was given.
What was his NFL career?
Jones played quarterback for the Falcons for five seasons. He coached quarterbacks for the Houston Oilers under Jerry Glanville in 1987, became Atlanta's offensive coordinator and was its head coach from 1994 to 1996. He was the Chargers' interim coach for 10 games in 1998 and turned down the chance to stay in the job.
And in college?
At Hawai'i he went 76-41 from 1999 to 2007, the most wins in school history, and his 2007 team, led by Colt Brennan, started 12-0 and reached the Sugar Bowl. At SMU he led the program to four straight bowl games, its first postseason appearances since the NCAA's 1987 "death penalty." Former Hawai'i quarterback Timmy Chang said Jones "gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to run his offense."
