Packers Criticize Officials After Roughing Penalties Help Lions to a 20-17 Win
Green Bay was flagged three times for hitting Jared Goff or Amon-Ra St. Brown after plays, including on the winning drive, and now has eight roughing-the-passer penalties in seven games. Trey Smack also missed two field goals.
Several Green Bay Packers players criticized the officiating after Sunday's 20-17 loss at Detroit, in which three roughing or unnecessary-roughness penalties extended Lions drives. "I'm not a big fan of the refs right now," safety Xavier McKinney said. Cornerback Keisean Nixon called one "a terrible call."
What were the calls?
Brenton Cox Jr. was flagged for roughing Jared Goff in the third quarter, and Karl Brooks for roughing the passer on Detroit's winning drive. Devonte Wyatt was called for unnecessary roughness when he tackled Amon-Ra St. Brown a second time after St. Brown got up and kept running; St. Brown knocked over umpire Terry Killens Jr., who threw the flag from the ground, and Detroit scored two plays later. Referee Alex Moore said in a pool report, "We ruled that the play was over," and that he "can't honestly hear if there was a whistle or not." Wyatt said he never heard one.
Did the officials decide it?
Not according to everyone in the locker room. "I don't think the refs lost us the game," tight end Tucker Kraft said. Green Bay went 1 for 3 in the red zone, and rookie kicker Trey Smack missed a 26-yard field goal and had a 35-yarder partially blocked with 3:21 left. Matt LaFleur declined to discuss the penalties. The Packers have eight roughing-the-passer penalties in seven games.
