Sam LaPorta's Status Uncertain for Lions' Season Opener
Coach Dan Campbell says a hip flare-up in practice will sideline the tight end for now, with his Week 1 availability against New Orleans not yet guaranteed.
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is dealing with a hip flare-up that has coach Dan Campbell unsure whether he'll be ready for the regular-season opener against New Orleans on Sept. 13.
What did Campbell say?
"It flared up a little bit, it's a little aggravated... we'll rest him for a little bit here and letting it calm down," Campbell said. Asked directly about Week 1, he added, "I feel like we'll be OK, but I don't know."
How does this connect to his 2025 season?
LaPorta missed eight games last season following back surgery for a herniated disk in November and had reportedly been free of lingering pain before this new hip issue surfaced. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has been planning to feature him heavily, making his availability a real point of concern for Detroit's offense.
