Raiders Hold Cousins and Crosby Out of Practice a Day After Scuffle
Coach Klint Kubiak benched both for Saturday's session as discipline, saying they'll return to practice Monday.
The Las Vegas Raiders held quarterback Kirk Cousins and pass rusher Maxx Crosby out of Saturday's practice as discipline, a day after the two got into a scuffle during a team period. "We have very clear expectations on how we want to practice and how we want to go about our business, and we violated that yesterday," coach Klint Kubiak said.
How long is the discipline?
Kubiak described it as a one-day matter, saying both players will "participate again on Monday." Neither Cousins nor Crosby practiced Saturday, but the sit-out wasn't framed as an extended punishment.
How is the locker room reacting?
Tight end Michael Mayer defended the intensity behind the incident: "You want him to defend your team... It's energy, man. We don't want to be throwing punches, but I think on any padded day of camp there's going to be some [scuffles]."
What's Kubiak's broader message?
Kubiak reiterated his stance from Friday that competitiveness between two of the team's leaders isn't itself the problem, but that practice has to stay controlled. "Those are two leaders on our team going at it," he said. "Obviously, fighting in a game, you throw a punch in a game, you are out of the game. So we got to be smart."
