Saints' Bryan Bresee Out for Season After Tearing ACL on First Day of Camp
The noncontact injury came on a pass-rush move, teammate Davon Godchaux called it a 'freak accident,' just after New Orleans exercised his fifth-year option.
New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee will have season-ending surgery after tearing his ACL on the very first day of training camp, coach Kellen Moore confirmed. The injury came with no contact involved. "It was like a freak accident," teammate Davon Godchaux said. "Hardly wasn't even any contact. Just really was a pass rush move and he felt his knee buckle."
How big a loss is this for New Orleans?
Bresee, a 2023 first-round pick, has started 26 career games including 15 last season, racking up 14.5 career sacks. The Saints had just exercised his fifth-year option worth $13.9 million, keeping him under contract through 2027, before the injury hit.
Has he dealt with a torn ACL before?
Yes. Bresee previously tore his left ACL during his final season at Clemson, meaning this marks the second major knee injury of his career.
Who fills the void up front?
Godchaux said there's no single direct replacement: "Everybody's the guy because D-line is a position where... everybody's going to play every game." Defensive end Chase Young added, "We need Vernon to step up. We need the whole interior to step up. And I have faith that they will."
