New Orleans Saints receiver Ja'Lynn Polk has retired at 24, less than a week into training camp, with the team placing him on the reserve/retired list Sunday.
What was his path to New Orleans?
New England drafted Polk in the second round out of Washington in 2024, but his rookie year was rough: 12 catches on 33 targets for 87 yards before a shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve. The Saints acquired him along with a 2028 seventh-round pick from the Patriots last September in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick, but he never appeared in a game for New Orleans.
Was there any explanation?
Coach Kellen Moore said Polk had been excused from the team's last two practices for personal reasons. No public statement from Polk himself has been released, and the Saints haven't detailed the specific reason behind the retirement.
What does this mean for New Orleans' receiver room?
Losing Polk removes a former second-round investment from a room that was already looking to sort out its depth chart. The Saints will need to lean more heavily on their remaining receivers as camp continues.
