Vinod Khosla group agrees to buy Seahawks for a reported $9.6 billion, a record NFL sale

The venture capitalist would take over a reigning-era contender fresh off a Super Bowl LX title, pending an owner vote scheduled for late August.

A group led by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has agreed to buy the Seattle Seahawks for a reported $9.612 billion, per sources, a price that would set a record for an NFL franchise sale. The deal, which ends the Paul G. Allen estate's stewardship of the team, still needs approval from the league's owners at a special meeting scheduled for late August.

What are the terms of the sale?

Khosla, the billionaire founder of Khosla Ventures, leads the group that has agreed to purchase the Seahawks for a reported $9.612 billion. It is not yet clear who else is part of his investor consortium. In a statement, Khosla said, "We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere." The agreement is between the buyer group and the seller, but it does not become final until the league signs off. That vote is the next major hurdle in the process.

How does the price rank among franchise sales?

The reported $9.612 billion figure would be the largest sum ever paid for an NFL team. It tops the previous league record set when a group bought the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion in 2023, and it dwarfs the $4.65 billion Denver Broncos sale from 2022. Across all of pro sports, the number sits just below the record $10 billion valuation attached to the Los Angeles Lakers sale to Mark Walter in 2025. The escalating price reflects both the scarcity of controlling stakes in NFL clubs and the appeal of a franchise that just reached the mountaintop.

Who is selling the team?

The Seahawks have been held by the estate of the late Paul G. Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who bought the team in 1997. Since Allen's death in 2018, his sister Jody Allen has served as executor of the trust and has overseen the franchise while a long-term ownership resolution was worked out. A sale had long been anticipated, as Allen's will directed that his sports holdings eventually be sold. This agreement, if approved, closes that chapter and installs the first new controlling owner the club has had in nearly three decades.

What has to happen for the deal to close?

The sale requires approval from the NFL's other owners, who are set to vote at a special meeting in late August. There is also a structural wrinkle to resolve: the Khosla family holds an ownership stake in the San Francisco 49ers, and league rules would require it to relinquish that interest before Khosla could become the controlling owner of a second team. Assuming those pieces fall into place, the group would inherit a roster in strong shape. Seattle is coming off its Super Bowl LX win over New England, and while Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III departed for the Chiefs, the franchise has locked in a young core by extending edge rusher Derick Hall and cornerback Devon Witherspoon. The new ownership would take over a contender rather than a rebuild.
