Vikings Suspend Assistant Gerald Alexander for 3 Weeks After DWI Plea

The defensive backs coach was found passed out behind the wheel in an Edina intersection in April and pleaded guilty to third-degree DWI on July 16.

The Minnesota Vikings have suspended defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander for three weeks without pay following an April drunken-driving arrest. Alexander, whom the team hired in February, pleaded guilty on July 16 to third-degree DWI, a gross misdemeanor, and paid $603 in fines and fees.

What happened in April?

Alexander was stopped in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina on April 26 after an officer responding to a welfare check found him passed out behind the wheel of his car in the middle of an intersection at 4:01 a.m. He refused a chemical test at the time of his arrest.

What did the legal process end with?

Alexander pleaded guilty to third-degree DWI on July 16, resolving the case with a gross-misdemeanor conviction and $603 in fines and fees rather than more serious charges.

What did the Vikings decide?

The team suspended Alexander for three weeks without pay, a punishment that began Friday and runs through Aug. 13. In a statement released by the team, Alexander said, "I take full responsibility for the situation I put myself in and apologize for not meeting the mark."
