A Jamaica-born tackle who didn't play football until high school, Alan Herron went from Division II Shorter University to a full ride at Maryland and an undrafted deal with the Saints.

Alan Herron's path to New Orleans is anything but conventional. Born in Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica, he grew up playing cricket and soccer before picking up football as a senior in Georgia. After two seasons starting at Shorter University, he transferred up to Maryland and turned himself into one of the Big Ten's more reliable right tackles.

Path to the league

Herron didn't join his high school football team at Banneker High in Union City, Georgia until his senior year, initially making his name as a varsity baseball player. He started his college career at Division II Shorter University, starting all 11 games at right tackle as a freshman and splitting time between right and left tackle as a sophomore, before transferring to Maryland ahead of the 2024 season. He went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft and signed with the Saints as a free agent.

Career highlights

At Maryland, Herron started all 12 games at right tackle in both 2024 and 2025, helping anchor an offensive line that allowed just 9 sacks in 2025, fifth-fewest nationally. He was penalized for holding only once across 24 career starts as a Terrapin and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention as a senior. He was also recognized academically as an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

2025 season recap

Herron's senior season at Maryland was his best. He started all 12 games at right tackle, kept his penalty count near zero, and helped the Terrapins field one of the stingiest pass-blocking lines in the country. That performance was enough to draw a pre-draft visit from the Saints, who signed him after the draft with guaranteed money and a signing bonus, betting on his combine testing and college tape to translate to the pros.
