A 1,000-yard rusher and MAC champion at Ohio in 2024 after starting his college career at Northwestern.
Anthony Tyus III is a running back trying to earn regular-season NFL snaps with the Carolina Panthers after a breakout final college season. He transferred from Northwestern to Ohio for 2024, powered the Bobcats to a conference title, and has since worked through several practice squads before settling into a futures deal in Carolina.
Path to the league
Tyus is the son of Anthony Tyus, who played college football at Central Michigan, and starred at Portage Northern High School in Portage, Michigan, rushing for over 1,800 yards as both a junior and senior. A three-star recruit, he chose Northwestern over Cincinnati, Iowa State, Michigan State and Indiana, then transferred to Ohio after the 2023 season. He went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Career highlights
After a limited role at Northwestern (504 rushing yards on 119 carries over three seasons), Tyus became Ohio's featured back in 2024, rushing for 1,234 yards and 9 touchdowns on 237 carries. He opened the season with 202 yards and two touchdowns against Syracuse and capped it with 151 rushing yards in the MAC Championship Game, which Ohio won. He earned Second-team All-MAC honors that season.
2025 season recap
Tyus signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent but was waived in mid-July 2025. He had a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks in August before being waived again, then signed to the Carolina Panthers practice squad in October 2025. He did not appear in a regular-season NFL game in 2025 and signed a reserve/future contract with Carolina in January 2026.
