Avonte Maddox is a versatile defensive back and Detroit native who joined his hometown Lions in 2025 after winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles.

Avonte Maddox started all four years at Pittsburgh before the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him in 2018. He spent seven seasons in Philadelphia, where he played primarily in the slot and won a ring in Super Bowl LIX. In 2025 he signed with the Detroit Lions, returning to the city where he grew up.

Path to the league

A Detroit native who starred at Martin Luther King High School, Maddox was a four-year starter at Pittsburgh. The Eagles selected him in the fourth round, 125th overall, of the 2018 NFL Draft. He developed into a dependable nickel and slot defender during his time in Philadelphia.

Career highlights

Maddox spent the 2018 through 2024 seasons with the Eagles, settling in as one of the league's steadier slot corners despite a string of injuries. He won his first Super Bowl when Philadelphia beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.

2025 season

Maddox signed a one-year contract with the Lions on March 21, 2025, joining his hometown team. He competed for nickel snaps in a Detroit secondary that also featured D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold and Amik Robertson.
