Lions' Avonte Maddox Leaves on Crutches With Foot Injury as Secondary Problems Grow

Maddox collided with teammate Chuck Clark in the end zone in the second quarter at Buffalo. Detroit is already without safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph and has allowed 30-plus points in both games.

Detroit Lions defensive back Avonte Maddox was carted to the locker room with a foot injury in the second quarter of Thursday's 41-31 loss at Buffalo and left the stadium on crutches with his left foot in a boot. "When he doesn't come back, that makes me nervous," coach Dan Campbell said, adding that he expects to know more Friday.

How thin is the secondary?

Safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are on the reserve/PUP list and will miss at least the first four games. Maddox was hurt colliding with safety Chuck Clark in the end zone. Josh Allen accounted for five touchdowns, and Detroit has now allowed 63 first downs through two games, tied for the second most in league history at this point of a season.

What did the Lions say afterward?

Linebacker Jack Campbell, an All-Pro last season, fought back tears: "I'm gonna be honest with you. Hats off to them; played terrible. It starts with me." Dan Campbell said of the performance, "At least you know now," and described his team as "figuring some stuff out." The Lions are 1-1 and have ten days before their next game.
