A tight end who retired from football over concussion concerns before making an improbable return, Grant Calcaterra is now a Super Bowl champion with the Eagles.

Grant Calcaterra's path to the NFL is one of the more unusual in the league: he walked away from the sport in college, earned his EMT license, and only came back to football after being inspired by watching the 2020 NFL Draft. Six years later he is a steady contributor on a Super Bowl-winning Eagles roster.

Path to the league

Calcaterra began his college career at Oklahoma, catching 36 passes for 558 yards and nine touchdowns and earning first-team All-Big 12 honors as a sophomore. After retiring from football following the 2019 season due to multiple concussions, he transferred to SMU and returned to the field, catching 38 passes for 465 yards and four touchdowns in his lone season there. The Eagles drafted him in the sixth round, 198th overall, in 2022.

Career highlights

Calcaterra made his NFL debut in Week 3 of his rookie season, catching a 40-yard pass from Jalen Hurts for his first career reception. He has since developed into a trusted piece of Philadelphia's tight end room, and he won a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles.

2025 season recap

Calcaterra played in 15 games for the Eagles in 2025, catching nine of 13 targets for 76 yards and a touchdown. His overall workload and production dipped compared to his 2024 season, as he played roughly 356 fewer offensive snaps.
