Nelson was a five-star recruit out of Stoughton High School in Stoughton, Wisconsin, and committed to play for the hometown Badgers. He redshirted in 2020, then became a four-year starter, appearing in all 51 of Wisconsin's games from 2021 through 2024 and starting 50 of them, working at both right guard and left tackle. The Falcons selected him with the No. 218 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
