Jake Moody arrived in the NFL as one of the most decorated kickers college football had produced in years, and he opened his rookie season by nailing a game-winning field goal in his first NFL appearance. Since then his career has taken a bumpier path, with accuracy issues costing him his job in San Francisco during the 2025 season. He now looks to reset his career with a new team.

Path to the league

Moody walked on at Michigan out of Northville, Michigan without a scholarship offer and developed into the best kicker in the country. He won the Lou Groza Award in 2021 as the nation's top kicker, led the FBS with 29 field goals made in 2022, and left Ann Arbor as the Wolverines' all-time leading scorer. The 49ers made him the highest-drafted kicker since 2016, taking him in the third round (No. 99 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.

2025 season recap

Moody's 2025 season began poorly, with two missed field-goal tries in San Francisco's Week 1 win over Seattle leading to his release just a week into the season. He bounced between the 49ers, Bears and Commanders as teams looked for a fix, ultimately converting 19 of 23 field-goal attempts and 15 of 16 extra points across nine total appearances split among the three organizations.
