2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year now in his second season under Jim Harbaugh.
Justin Herbert has spent his career being told he is on the verge of taking the leap. Year one under Jim Harbaugh in 2024 was a real efficiency breakout: 3,870 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, three interceptions, a 90.2 PFF grade that ranked third among quarterbacks. The 2025 follow-up brought a second Pro Bowl nod and continued the slow, steady upward trajectory.
Path to the league
Stayed all four years at Oregon when most projected first-round QBs leave early. Won the 2019 Pac-12 Championship and the 2020 Rose Bowl. The Chargers took him sixth overall in 2020. He took over for an injured Tyrod Taylor in Week 2 of his rookie year and never gave the job back.
Career highlights
2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year (rookie records for passing TDs and 300-yard games). First Chargers quarterback to throw for 5,000-plus yards in a season (2021). Two-time Pro Bowler. Quietly one of the most accurate deep-ball passers in the league across the past four seasons.
2025 season recap
3,727 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 498 rushing yards. The Chargers went 11-6 and won a Wild Card game before losing to New England in the Divisional Round. Herbert's career-high rushing total reflected Harbaugh's commitment to using designed runs to manage his quarterback's exposure.
What to watch in 2026
Year two of the Harbaugh era is supposed to be the leap. The Chargers used early draft capital on offensive line and added Omarion Hampton as the lead back. Herbert's MVP odds opened at +1500, sixth on the board. The schedule isn't favorable (AFC West plus crossover with NFC North) but the roster around him has finally been built to support a championship push.
