A former FBS rushing leader out of Central Michigan who is now chasing a full-time NFL role with the Pittsburgh Steelers after stops in Green Bay and Philadelphia.

Lew Nichols III built his name as one of college football's most productive runners before a winding path through the NFL. The Detroit native led the entire FBS in rushing yards during his sophomore season at Central Michigan and has since worked his way through three franchises, most recently making his NFL regular-season debut with the Steelers.

Path to the league

Nichols was a star at Central Michigan, winning MAC Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2020 before exploding in 2021 with 1,848 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 341 carries, leading all of FBS in rushing yards and earning MAC Offensive Player of the Year. He finished his college career with 3,060 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns before the Green Bay Packers selected him in the seventh round, 235th overall, of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Career highlights

After being waived by Green Bay in 2023, Nichols spent time on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad and reserve/future contract, cycling through multiple releases and re-signings, including a stint on the roster during the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX-winning 2024 season. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on July 29, 2025.

2025 season recap

Nichols made his NFL regular-season debut with the Steelers on November 2, 2025, against the Indianapolis Colts, recording one tackle on special teams. He remained with Pittsburgh through the season as the club worked him into its running back rotation.
