Luke McCaffrey switched from quarterback to wide receiver mid-career at Rice and turned that gamble into a third-round selection by Washington. The younger brother of NFL MVP-caliber back Christian McCaffrey and son of Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey, Luke was flashing explosive playmaking ability in 2025 before a gruesome collarbone injury ended his season early.

Path to the league

McCaffrey began his college career as a quarterback at Nebraska before transferring first toward Louisville and ultimately to Rice, where he switched to wide receiver in 2022. He earned First-team All-AAC honors as a senior in 2023, finishing with 71 receptions for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns, and the Commanders drafted him in the third round (100th overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Career highlights

McCaffrey comes from one of football's deepest family trees: his father Ed McCaffrey won three Super Bowls as a receiver, his brother Christian is a star running back for the San Francisco 49ers, and his grandfather Dave Sime won Olympic silver in the 100 meters. As a rookie in 2024, McCaffrey appeared in all 17 games, catching 18 passes for 168 yards while also handling kickoff return duties.

2025 season recap

McCaffrey was having his most explosive season as a pro before it ended early, posting 11 catches for 203 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 targets through nine games, an average of over 18 yards per catch, while adding 769 yards as a kick returner. He suffered a broken collarbone on the opening kickoff of Washington's Week 9 game against Seattle and was placed on injured reserve, missing the remainder of the season.
