A former Toledo standout who led the MAC in passes defensed three straight seasons, Samuel Womack III has bounced across four organizations while chasing a permanent NFL role.

Samuel Womack III built his reputation at Toledo as one of the most consistent ball-hawking corners in the MAC before the 49ers drafted him in 2022. His NFL path since has been a winding one, moving through San Francisco, Indianapolis and Tennessee before landing with the Jets.

Path to the league

Womack played five seasons at Toledo from 2017 to 2021, appearing in 51 games and recording 128 tackles, 40 passes defensed and five interceptions. He led the MAC in passes defensed in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The 49ers selected him in the fifth round, 172nd overall, of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Career highlights

Womack spent his first two NFL seasons with the 49ers before a stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. Through his first three seasons, he appeared in 40 games with nine starts, totaling 54 tackles, three interceptions, 11 passes defensed and eight special-teams tackles.

2025 season recap

Womack was claimed off waivers by the Tennessee Titans on August 27, 2025. He appeared in four games for Tennessee, recording two tackles, before being waived on November 26, 2025. The Jets signed him to their practice squad shortly after, on December 2, 2025, as he continues working to secure a full-time roster spot.
