Tre Avery's career reads like a lesson in perseverance: a detour from Ohio State to Toledo to Rutgers in college, followed by stops with five different NFL teams in a span of years. He finally found a steady home on Cleveland's roster in 2025.

Path to the league

Avery originally committed to Ohio State before eligibility issues sent him to Toledo, and he ultimately landed at Rutgers, where he earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2020. He went undrafted in 2022 and signed with the Tennessee Titans.

Career highlights

Avery spent three seasons in Tennessee, posting a career-high 33 tackles and two pass deflections in 2023. He has totaled 78 career tackles, 11 pass deflections and a fumble recovery across 48 games with the Titans, 49ers, Patriots, Buccaneers and Browns.

2025 season recap

Avery's 2025 season was a whirlwind: waived by Tennessee, claimed by San Francisco, waived again, claimed by New England, released, signed by Tampa Bay, waived again, and finally landing on Cleveland's practice squad in September before earning a promotion to the active roster in October. He appeared in 10 games for the Browns down the stretch, recording 13 tackles, and re-signed with Cleveland in March 2026.
