An elite combine athlete out of Texas Tech whose freakish jumping numbers helped him stick as an undrafted safety in Washington.

Tyler Owens turned heads at the 2024 NFL Combine with a near world-record broad jump and top vertical among safeties, but went undrafted anyway. He signed with Washington as a free agent and has since worked to translate that athleticism into a consistent role in the secondary.

Path to the league

A four- or five-star recruit and All-American Bowl selection out of Plano East Senior High School in Texas, Owens began his college career at Texas before transferring to Texas Tech for his final two seasons. He posted a career-best 37 tackles and two pass breakups as a fifth-year senior with the Red Raiders.

Career highlights

Owens' calling card has always been elite athletic testing. At the 2024 NFL Combine, he posted the best vertical jump among safeties and a broad jump of 12 feet 2 inches, just an inch off the world record for the event. Despite that performance, he went unselected in the 2024 NFL Draft and signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent.

2025 season recap

Owens has worked his way onto Washington's roster as a depth safety and special-teamer, totaling 24 tackles and a forced fumble through his time with the Commanders. He was placed on injured reserve in early January 2025 as he continues developing his role in the defense.
