A UConn-to-Maine transfer who once lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat, Zavier Scott ground out a reserve running back role in Minnesota after years bouncing between practice squads.

Zavier Scott is a running back who began his college career at UConn before transferring to Maine, where his versatility across running back, receiver and even Wildcat quarterback made him a valuable offensive piece. After going undrafted in 2023 and spending time on Indianapolis's and Minnesota's practice squads, Scott earned a spot on the Vikings' 53-man roster in 2025 and carved out a reserve role behind the team's veteran backs.

Path to the league

Scott redshirted his first year at UConn in 2017, then played in ten games in 2018 and four in 2019 before transferring to Maine, where he played from 2020 through 2022. At Maine, he lined up at running back, wide receiver, tight end and occasionally quarterback in Wildcat formations, earning third-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors as a halfback in 2022. He went undrafted in 2023, signed with the Indianapolis Colts, and later joined the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad in August 2024 before earning a reserve/futures contract.

Career highlights

Scott's college production peaked in 2022 at Maine, when he led the team in receptions with 42 for 434 yards and was also the Black Bears' second-leading rusher. His versatility across multiple positions, including quarterback in short-yardage packages, made him a difficult matchup problem in college and helped extend his path to an NFL roster spot despite going undrafted.

2025 season recap

Scott made Minnesota's 53-man roster in 2025 after an impressive preseason and appeared in all 16 games, working mainly on special teams behind starters Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason. He finished with 32 carries for 114 yards and 14 receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, catching his first career NFL touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
