Johnson was an All-American quarterback recruit at Port Neches-Groves High School before switching to running back as a freshman at Texas. Over four seasons with the Longhorns, he rushed for 2,190 yards and 23 touchdowns on 392 carries while adding 56 catches for 420 yards, often serving as Texas' primary pass-blocking back. The Chicago Bears selected him in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.
