49ers Put Starting DT C.J. West on IR, Sign Naquan Jones and Add Brandin Cooks to Practice Squad
West needs surgery on a bone chip in a knee that has bothered him since camp. San Francisco is down to two of the five defensive tackles that made the roster, and DeMarcus Robinson is out three to six weeks with a high ankle sprain.
The San Francisco 49ers placed starting defensive tackle C.J. West on injured reserve Wednesday with a bone chip in his knee that requires surgery. Kyle Shanahan said the injury is not season-ending but will cost West "at least a chunk of the season."
What happened?
Shanahan said the knee had been bothering West since training camp and got worse after the win over Miami: "I don't know if this is the same or if it was something new. But it was bothering him a lot after the game." Alfred Collins is already out for the year with a patellar injury. "Anytime you have five D tackles make a team and you're down to two of them after two games, that's always a concern for anybody," Shanahan said. Osa Odighizuwa and Gracen Halton are the healthy tackles, and the 49ers signed Naquan Jones, who has 60 career games and eight starts, from Minnesota's practice squad.
Why Brandin Cooks?
The receiver room keeps shrinking. DeMarcus Robinson has a high ankle sprain and is out three to six weeks, Ricky Pearsall and De'Zhaun Stribling are on injured reserve, Christian Kirk cannot return until after Week 4, and Mike Evans is being managed through a sore hip ahead of Sunday's game against Arizona. Cooks, who turns 33 on Friday, joins the practice squad. Offensive lineman James Thompson Jr. also has a high ankle sprain.
